Comprehensive Engineering Guide: Fluoroplastic Lined Pipes, Valves, and Fittings
In facilities handling concentrated sulfuric acid, hydrofluoric acid, or volatile organic solvents, specifying a high-quality chemical pump solves only half of the fluid transfer challenge. The pipeline network connecting the tanks, reactors, and pumps must possess the exact same level of chemical inertness and mechanical strength. Utilizing PTFE lined pipes and fluoroplastic lined valves provides a highly corrosion-resistant continuous pathway, combining the structural integrity of steel with the extensive chemical resistance of fluoropolymers.
The Mechanics of Lined Piping Systems
Solid plastic pipes (such as PVC or pure PTFE tubing) lack the tensile strength required to safely span pipe racks, withstand hydraulic water hammer, or endure elevated temperatures without severe thermal warping. Conversely, exotic metal pipes (like Hastelloy or Titanium) are prohibitively expensive for extensive plant networks.
Lined piping solves this by utilizing seamless carbon steel pipe as the outer pressure vessel. The interior of the steel is lined with PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) or F46. This composite design allows the pipeline to safely handle continuous fluid temperatures up to 200°C and internal pressures up to 2.5 MPa. Because the aggressive chemical only ever contacts the fluoroplastic, there is zero risk of galvanic corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, or heavy-metal contamination of the process fluid.
Essential Piping Components and Accessories
Constructing a complete chemical transfer loop requires a variety of specialized corrosion resistant fittings:
- Directional Fittings (Elbows & Tees): Lined 45° and 90° elbows, equal tees, and four-way crosses allow for complex spatial routing. The lining in these components is often molded or injected to ensure uniform thickness at the high-wear curvature points.
- Reducers: Concentric and eccentric lined reducers are critical. Eccentric reducers, installed with the flat side up at the pump suction nozzle, are mandatory to prevent the accumulation of air pockets that cause pump cavitation.
- Sight Glasses: Fabricated with carbon steel bodies and lined with PTFE, utilizing heavy-duty borosilicate glass. These allow operators to visually monitor flow rates, fluid color changes, and reaction progress at temperatures up to 150°C and pressures up to 1.5 MPa.
- Chlorine/Dosing Pipes: Specialized PTFE injection pipes (including internally/externally lined or solid PTFE variants) are used for introducing highly reactive chemicals directly into reactors. Engineers must calculate the required outer diameter and effective inner diameter based on the specific dosing flow rate.
Fluoroplastic Lined Valves for Flow Control
Standard metallic valves degrade rapidly at the seat and stem when exposed to severe corrosives, leading to internal leakage and loss of process control. We manufacture specialized lined valves to integrate seamlessly with the pipeline:
Lined Globe Valves: Designed for precise throttling and on/off control. The entire inner cavity of the valve body, the valve cover, and the wetted portion of the valve stem are lined with F46 or PTFE. They operate safely between -20°C and 120°C at pressures up to 1.6 MPa, providing tight shut-off.
Lined Discharge Valves: Engineered for installation at the bottom of chemical reactors and storage tanks. These valves facilitate the rapid, unhindered discharge of corrosive slurries and liquids, preventing product accumulation in dead zones.
