Overcoming Severe Wear and Corrosion in Slurry Transfer
Mining, hydrometallurgy, and flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) processes subject fluid transfer equipment to dual destructive forces. Pumps must endure aggressive chemical corrosion from acids (such as sulfuric or phosphoric acid) alongside intense mechanical abrasion from ore particles, crystalline solids, and limestone. Standard metallic centrifugal pumps degrade rapidly through acid attack, while conventional thin-film plastic pumps lack the structural resilience to survive continuous particulate scouring. Effective slurry pump solutions must bridge this material gap to prevent costly unplanned downtime.
What defines a reliable chemical slurry pump solution?
The engineered solution utilizes a heavy-duty metallic outer casing combined with an ultra-thick, highly abrasion-resistant polymeric lining. By integrating semi-open impeller geometries and specialized dynamic shaft seals, the pump ensures continuous flow for dense, solid-bearing sludges without internal clogging or premature mechanical seal failure.
UHMWPE Technology for Abrasive Media
Our primary engineering approach for abrasive environments relies on Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE). By lining a heavy cast-steel pump matrix with an 8 to 20 mm thick layer of UHMWPE, we create a flow path that consistently outlasts hard alloys in abrasion tests. Simultaneously, this material remains chemically inert to strong acids and alkalis at temperatures up to 80°C. This exceptional thickness provides a sacrificial wear allowance, extending the operational life of the abrasive slurry pump in extreme duty cycles.
Managing High-Density Sludges and Shaft Sealing
Handling heavy ore pulps requires specific internal fluid dynamics. The UHB-ZK series incorporates semi-open impellers without front shrouds. This architecture facilitates the smooth passage of fibrous materials, filter-press feeds, and crystalline liquids, eliminating the restrictive choke points found in closed-impeller chemical pumps.
Protecting the rotating shaft from aggressive particulates is equally critical. We implement K-type dynamic seals (an auxiliary impeller combined with a parking lip seal) which generate a counter-centrifugal force to push abrasive particles away from the shaft interface during operation. For applications requiring absolute environmental containment, double-end mechanical seals equipped with external clean-water flushing plans are deployed to ensure the seal faces remain lubricated and free of grit.
Proven Applications in Heavy Industry
These chemical slurry pump solutions operate continuously in the harshest industrial sectors globally. In non-ferrous hydrometallurgy (processing zinc, copper, cobalt, and rare earths), they safely transfer highly acidic mother liquors and corrosive electrolytes. In environmental protection, they function as reliable mine water pumps and circulate alkaline absorption slurries in wet FGD towers, effortlessly processing abrasive limestone and gypsum mixtures without the severe erosion common in standard transfer pumps.
